NCAC Weekly Release (9-10-12) - Women's Soccer
While non-conference contests dominate the North Coast soccer schedule this week, Denison (0-0, 0-4) will go on the road to square off against DePauw (0-0, 0-4) in the first conference game of the year.
ALLEGHENY won the Blue Devil Classic hosted by Fredonia State. Since yielding a goal to Baldwin-Wallace in the 39th minute of the season-opener, the Gators have kept the opposition of the board for 411 consecutive minutes. Sam Hoderlein (Pleasant Plain, OH/UrsulineAcademy) was named Tournament MVP, while Alison Buzzard (New Hartford, NY/ New Hartford), Ashley Lehr (Fairview, PA/Fairview), and Hannah Zangara (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) all named to the All-Tournament Team.
DENISON suffered a pair of 1-0 defeats this week against No. 13 Case and at Gettysburg. All four of Denison’s defeats have been by one goal this season.
DEPAUW dropped an overtime decision at Kalamazoo in the 103rd minute. Angela Cotherman (Lake Forrest, IL/ Brewster) recorded the Tigers’ goal against the Hornets, while Dana Sprague (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/Cushing Academy) had the one against Alma
HIRAM turned in a 1-2 record last week, falling to Mount Union, 4-2, and Otterbein, 3-0, before bouncing back to knock off Waynesburg 2-0. The Terriers will be back in action Wednesday as they host Baldwin-Wallace.
KENYON dropped both of it’s games in Lynchburg College’s Shellenberger Classic. The Ladies fell to host and No. 11-ranked Lynchburg, 3-2, on Saturday and then were defeated, 1-0, by Roanoke on Sunday.
In its first game of the week OBERLIN tied Baldwin Wallace, 1-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Frost (Germantown, MD/Poolesville) had 17 saves in the game. Oberlin then dropped its remaining games, as they failed to find the back of the net against Waynesburg or Mount Union.
Sophomore back Sarah Stachowiak (Westlake, OH/Westlake) and junior forward Elizabeth Riggio (Itasca, IL/Lake Park) tallied goals to lift OHIO WESLEYAN over Mount St. Joseph in non-conference action. Stachowiak scored the game-winner midway through the first half, her first collegiate goal. Junior Hannah Zacharias (Marysville, OH/Marysville) finished with 6 saves in posting the shutout. Freshman forward Claire Lofgren (Kirtland, OH/Kirtland) scored early in the second half to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Washington & Jefferson in the Bishops’ home opener. The Bishops took the lead in the 49th minute when sophomore defender Emma Markey (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) crossed the ball to Lofgren, who finished the chance in front. Zacharias finished with 4 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal.
WITTENBERG’S 0-2-1 record on the week conceals a fine team effort that included two one-goal losses and a hard-fought tie. The Tigers lost 1-0 at Wilmington before tying with Carnegie Mellon at the DoubleTree Tartan Cup, followed by a close 2-1 loss versus Frostburg State in the Cup. Senior goalkeeper Cassie Lythjohan (Centerville, OH/Centerville) maintained a save percentage of .917 in the two games she played, allowing just one goal in 200 minutes with 11 saves.
WOOSTER was busy this past week playing three games and posting a record of 1-1-1 with the lone win coming against Marietta, 3-1. Wooster, now 3-1-1 overall, will return to action Wednesday as they host Case Western.
