NCAC Weekly Release (9-24-12) - Volleyball

North Coast volleyball action opened last week with three teams boasting unblemished records, including Wittenberg (2-0, 10-2), Hiram (2-0, 13-4) and DePauw (1-0, 13-2). Conference matches continue in the following week with one match each on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and two more on Saturday.

ALLEGHENY dropped thee matches last week, including two matches against NCAC foes. Junior setter Madie Hudac (Mars, PA/Mars) led the Gators on the week with 77 assists, 45 digs and two service aces in 11 total sets.

DENISON freshmen Kenzie Kuhn (Naperville, IL/Benet Acad.) and Brittany Perry (Tiffin, OH/Calvert) sparked the Big Red’s efforts last week. Kuhn led DU with a combined 21 kills in losses against Wittenberg and Rose-Hulman, while Perry racked up 19 kills in a 3-1 victory over Anderson.

DEPAUW extended its record-setting win streak to 13 with a pair of straight-set wins last week against Rose-Hulman and Oberlin. Junior Kelly Doyle (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) was key to the Tigers’ offensive attack last week as she totaled 19 kills and a .630 hitting percentage.

HIRAM posted a 2-1 record last week, including a pair of NCAC wins over Oberlin, 3-0, and Kenyon, 3-1.

KENYON opened the week with a 3-2 win over Ohio Wesleyan, but were upended by Hiram, 3-1, and Marietta, 3-1, in a home tri-match at home on Saturday. Junior Sierra DeLeon (Upper Marlboro, MD/Maret School) racked up 39 kills and 16 digs in 13 total sets.

OBERLIN dropped a pair league matches last week, opening with a 3-0 setback against Hiram on September 19th and a 3-0 loss against DePauw on Saturday.

OHIO WESLEYAN suffered a narrow 3-2 decision against Kenyon in mid-week action and split a Saturday tri-match at home, defeating conference-foe Allegheny, 3-1, before falling to nationally-ranked Otterbein, 3-0. In the win over Allegheny, freshman Meigan Day (Port Clinton, OH/Port Clinton) set a school record with 10 block assists to top the previous benchmark of eight set by Melissa Hill against Kenyon in the 2001 season. The Battling Bishops also broke the team record for block assists in a game with 33, surpassing the previous mark of 24 also set against Kenyon in 2001.

WITTENBERG kicked off the 2012 NCAC slate with a pair of wins over Denison, 3-0, and Wooster, 3-1. Freshman Kara Seidenstricker (London, OH/Jonathan Alder) led the Tigers to a .315 hitting percentage at Wooster with 18 kills and only one error in 28 attempts for an individual hitting percentage of .607. She also led the team at Denison with 13 kills and four block assists, while senior setter Hallie Donathan (Tipp City, OH/Tippecanoe) dished out 19 assists and two service aces.

WOOSTER opened play last week with a 3-0 conference victory over Allegheny and followed that performance with a 3-2 triumph over Case, before falling in league play against Wittenberg, 3-1, on Saturday. Junior Paige Parker (Springfield, OH/West Liberty-Salem) paced the Fighting Scots in the victories with 11 kills against Allegheny and matching a career-best with 23 against Case. Parker, who also tallied 11 kills against Wittenberg on Saturday, was also a force on the defensive end as she finished the week with 36 digs in 12 total sets.
