2012 NCAC Tennis Players of the Week

MEN WOMEN
April 23rd

Paul Burgin, Kenyon
(Baltimore, MD/Pikesville)

Kenyon’s No. 1 player, junior Paul Burgin picked up four more match wins this week. At No. 1 singles, he defeated his counterparts from Oberlin and Ohio Wesleyan while dropping just two games. He paird up with two different teammates in doubles play, but the results were the same. Burgin did his part in an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles against Oberlin and in an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles against Ohio Wesleyan.

Abigail Younger, Kenyon
(Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Prep)

Kenyon freshman Abigail Younger went 2-0 at No. 6 singles this week. Her 6-3, 6-4 win at Allegheny on Sunday provided the decisive point as the Ladies rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take a 5-4 win. At Wooster, Younger also won at No. 6 singles and paired up with senior Anna Becker (Portland, OR/Sunset) for a No. 2 doubles win.

April 16th

Logan Chun, Oberlin
(Honolulu, HI/Iolani)

Oberlin freshman Logan Chun helped the Yeomen improve to 10-10 on the year, marking the most wins in a season for the Yeomen since 2006 when they went 14-9. Chun went unbeaten at No. 1 singles, winning against Albion and Alma, and was a perfect 3-0 at No. 2 doubles defeating Albion, Alma and Calvin.

Carolyn Ball, Oberlin
(Milwaukee, WI/Divine Savior Holy Angels)

Oberlin senior Carolyn Ball turned in a 5-0 week, going 3-0 at No. 2 doubles and 2-0 playing No. 4 singles and No. 6 singles. Against Denison, she scored the clinching point as her and Ariel Lewis (Vacaville, CA/Vanden) won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles to give Oberlin a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. She then clinched the match, scoring the decisive fifth point by winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 at No.6  singles.

April 9th

Tom Cawood, Denison
(East Lansing, MI/East Lansing)

Denison senior Tom Cawood went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles competition winning a three-set decision against Dayton and posting a straight-set win against the Yeomen. He. along with fellow senior Tim Martin (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park-River Forest), posted an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles against the Flyers, and won 8-2 at the first flight against Oberlin.

Alex Marcell, Denison
(Chicago, IL/Loyola Academy)

Denison junior Alex Marcell went a combined 9-0 last week after going 4-0 at No. 2 singles and 5-0 at the first doubles flight with partner Sarah Short (Cheswick, PA/Fox Chapel). All four of Marcell’s singles wins came in straight-sets, with her opponent scoring no more than two points per set. 

April 2nd

Nate Koelper, Wabash
(Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia)

Wabash sophomore Nate Koelper won all three matches in the number five singles draw to win the individual title at the 2012 Kerry Seward Memorial Tournament last weekend. He scored straight-set wins in all three matches, recording a 6-1, 6-1 win in the first round, a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the semifinals and a 7-5, 7-5 win in the championship round.  

Sarah Short, Denison
(Cheswick, PA/Fox Chapel)

Denison senior Sarah Short went 4-0 on the week after logging a pair of singles and doubles wins. Short posted victories over Wittenberg’s Leah Ann Miller (6-4, 6-1) and Dayton’s Claire McNulty (6-4, 6-3) at first singles. The senior has now won five-straight singles matches and is 6-5 at the first singles flight.

March 26th

Pat Cole, Allegheny
Livonia, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit

Allegheny sophomore Pat Cole posted a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles last week. Cole started the week by defeating No. 22 regionally ranked Chris Kuna of Wisconsin Eau-Claire 6-1, 6-0 and went on to defeat No. 10 regionally ranked Brian McCarthy 6-4, 6-1. Cole also partnered with Kevin Kacer to win a doubles match against the
No. 15 regionally ranked tandem.

Leah Ann Miller, Wittenberg
Springfield, OH/Catholic Central

Wittenberg sophomore Leah Ann Miller did not drop a set in singles action, winning 6-0, 6-0 in both matches at the No. 1 spot. Miller also won in both of  her No. 1 doubles matches as she led  the Tigers to two 9-0 wins over Transylvania and IU-East.

March 19th

Juan Guerra, Denison
(Midland, MI/H.H. Dow)

Denison sophomore Juan Guerra (Midland, MI/H.H. Dow) logged seven wins last week after posting a 3-0 record in singles play and a 4-0 mark at the third doubles flight. In singles action, Guerra won a straight-set decision at No. 3 singles against Lake Forest College. The sophomore followed that up wtih back-to-back straight-set victories at the first flight against Division II Kutztown and Connecticut College. In doubles play, Guerra logged a pair of shutout wins against Lake Forest and Conneticut College. He also won 8-2 and 8-4 decisions against Macalester and Kutztown, respectively.

Emily Kiourtsis, Ohio Wesleyan
(Pickerington, OH/North)

Senior Emily Kiourtsis (Pickerington, OH/North) was a double winner in all four matches as Ohio Wesleyan swept its competition last week by defeating East Stroudsburg, Millersville, Olivet and Greenville. On the week, Kiourtsis went 4-0 at No. 2 singles and 4-0 at No. 2 doubles. She did not lose a set in singles play during the four matches, and had two shutouts during the week.

March 12th

Ian Streicker, Wittenberg
(South Lebanon, OH/Loveland)

Wittenberg Freshman Ian Streicker went 4-1 on the week at No. 1 singles, including a close 10-7 tiebreaker victory against Duncan Miller of Methodist. Streicker holds an overall record of 10-7, including going 8-3 at the No. 1 position in singles play. 

Alex Cummins, Wittenberg
(New Lebanon, OH/Dixie)

Wittenberg senior Alex Cummins led the Tigers over their spring break trip in Hilton Head, South Carolina, with a 3-2 record at No. 1 singles and a 3-2 record in doubles action. She helped lead the Tigers to victories over Assumption, 7-2, Regis, 9-0, and Findlay, 5-4.
 

March 5th

Paul Burgin, Kenyon
(Baltimore, MD/Pikesville)

Kenyon junior Paul Burgin went undefeated in singles and doubles competition in two matches on Sunday in California. He first picked up a No. 1 single, three-set victory over Fabricio Moncada of St. Johns (MN) who is ranked 21st in the country. He also paired with Kevin Ye (Duluth, GA/Woodward Acad.) to take an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles against St. Johns. Against Swarthmore, he picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Zak Kelm.

Maggie MacPhail, DePauw
(Indianapolis, IN/Park Tudor)

DePauw freshman Maggie MacPhail helped guide the Tigers to a third-place finish at the ITA National Indoor Championships after posting a record of 2-1 at No. 2 singles and 2-1 at No. 1 doubles. After dropping the first singles set against Carmen VacaGuzman of Chicago by a 6-1 decision, she rallied to win the second set 6-1 and then completed the comeback with a 7-6 (7-5) tie-break victory in the third set.

February 27th

Tim Rosensteel, Kenyon
(East Windsor, NJ/Peddie)

Kenyon freshman Tim Rosensteel, playing at No. 5 singles, won all three of his singles matches to help lead the Lords to a third-place finish at the ITA National Indoor Championships in St. Peter, Minnesota.
 

Kelly Gebert, DePauw
(Wichita, KS/Mt. Carmel Catholic)

DePauw senior Kelly Gerbert helped guide the Tigers to three victories on the week over Luther, 9-0, Oberlin, 8-1, and Grand Valley St., 6-3. Gerbert was 5-1 on the week overall with her lone loss coming in the No. 1 singles position against Grand Valley State.

February 19th

Landon Moore, Wooster
(Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional)

Wooster sophomore Landon Moore helped the Fighting Scots earn a 7-2 triumph over Otterbein in the first-ever tennis match played in the Scot Center. Moore swept his Otterbein opponent at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1, and was part of an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles.
 

Ariel Lewis, Oberlin
(Vacaville, CA/Vacaville)

Oberlin senior Ariel Lewis improved to 3-0 at the No. 1 singles spot this season after earning a 6-1, 6-4 win on Saturday in the Yeowomen’s 8-1 triumph over Otterbein. Lewis, who is ranked 12th in the Central Region, has now earned 76 career singles wins.
