The Wittenberg athletic department and the Allegheny softball team were both honored at the 2012 NCAA Convention for community service efforts. Both parties earned the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) Community Service Award, which is given out annually at the NCAA Convention.
The DePauw University softball team will enter its first season of play in the North Coast Athletic Conference ranked ninth in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NCAA Div. III Top 25 preseason poll. In addition, Hiram also appears in the poll under the "others receiving votes" section. DePauw eliminated Hiram from the 2011 NCAA Div. III Adrian Regional in the final game to advance to the NCAA Div. III Softball Championships.
Ohio Wesleyan won one outright championship and finished tied for first in another to take the lead in the race for the 2011-12 North Coast Athletic Conference All-Sports championship.
Delta Lodge Director of Athletics William Roth has named Mimi Mahon as the new Head Softball Coach at Oberlin College. Mahon comes to Oberlin from nearby Case Western Reserve University where she spent the last season as the lead assistant for Head Coach Josie Henry.
Hiram (29-14) saw its histortic run at the 2011 NCAA Div. III Adrian Regional come to a close on Monday afternoon, falling to DePauw, 7-0, in the second game of the championship round in Adrian, Michigan. The Terriers battled not only the seven other teams at the competitive regional tournament, but also had to overcome numerous weather delays throughout the weekend.
The North Coast Athletic Conference placed seven student-athletes on the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Central Region Squad. Hiram, Denison and Ohio Wesleyan each had at least one player named to one of the three All-Central Region teams.
Denison senior infielder Erica Evans (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) was named Player of the Year and Denison freshman pitcher Rebecca Dyer (Shelby Twp., MI/Detroit Country Day) took pitcher of the Year honors to highlight the 2011 All-North Coast Athletic Conference softball selections.
Hiram, which is making its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history, will travel to the Adrian Regional to take on Alma (33-6) in an opening-round contest on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
Third-seeded Hiram (25-12) claimed its second NCAC Tournament title after defeating top-seeded Denison (30-9), 3-2, in the championship game on Saturday in Granville. The Terriers opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over second-seeded Ohio Wesleyan (23-14) on Friday, and advanced to the championship round with an 8-4 triumph over Denison on the same day. The Terriers did drop the first game of the championship round against the Big Red on Saturday, 6-3, but came back strong in the nightcap to earn the conference’s automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA Softball Tournament.
Four North Coast Athletic Conference Softball Players were selected to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District Team in district 4. Denison, Hiram and Wooster each had at least one player selected to one of the three all-district squads.
