NCAC Weekly Release (4-30-12) - Outdoor Track & Field
The 2012 NCAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for this weekend (May 4-5) at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Friday’s action will begin with field events at 12:00 p.m., while Saturday’s action also opens with field events beginning at 10:00 a.m. Wabash is the defending NCAC men’s outdoor champions after capturing its first-ever outdoor title at last year’s meet, while Ohio Wesleyan will be looking to capture its fourth-straight NCAC title at this year’s meet. The first scoring events of the 2012 meet, the men’s decathlon and the women’s heptathlon, took place this past weekend at Ohio Wesleyan. Ohio Wesleyan junior Clare Duffy (Concord, OH/Painesville Riverside) won the women’s Heptathlon title with 3,912 points, while DePauw freshman Jack Leibovitz (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) won the men’s Decathlon title with 6,165 points.

DENISON hosted a grouping of NCAC squads at its annual Big Red Invitational on Friday evening in Granville. The Big Red got a strong effort from senior Chris Roth (Milwaukee, WI/University School of Milwaukee) who won the 200-meter dash (21.88) and finished second in the 100-meter dash (11.13), while Katherine Sylvia (Butler, PA/Butler) led the DU women by winning both the shot put (34’03.00”) and discus (128’08.00”). The KENYON men’s squad was led by freshman Lucas Herweyer (Hillsborough, NC/Orange) who won the discus with a toss of 129’02.00” and placed second in the shot put (41’00.50”), while the Ladies were led by sophomore Regan Fink (Morriston, NJ/Pingry) who finished second in both the discus (101’05.00”) and javelin (94’10.00”). WITTENBERG also competed at the Big Red Invitational and saw four men’s student-athletes capture event titles, led by sophomore Victor Banjo (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin) who won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.92-seconds, while the Tiger women were led by sophomore Molly King (Springfield, OH/Northeastern) who won the 3,000-meter run (10:49.13). The WOOSTER men were paced by sophomore Gabriel Abud (Wooster, OH/Wooster) who won the 1,500-meter run (4:15.29), while junior Veronique Jones (Reynoldsburg, OH/Columbus School for Girls) highlighted Wooster’s five women’s individual event titles by shattering the school record in the hammer with a heave of 125’09.00”.
DENISON, KENYON, OBERLIN and OHIO WESLEYAN all sent select student-athletes to the Hillsdale College Gina Relays on Friday in Michigan. Denison senior Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, OH/Lakewood) posted the seventh-best time in Div. III in the 5,000-meter run at the event with a time of 14:22.07. Kenyon sophomore Jenna Willett (Kensington, MD/Walter Johnson) broke her own school record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:00.86, while Oberlin sophomore Molly Martorella (Winchendon, MA/Murdock) finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a school-record time of 16:41.98. Ohio Wesleyan senior Kale Booher (Covington, OH/Newton) also shined at the Gina Relays, finishing ninth overall and first among Div. III runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:08.58.
OBERLIN and OHIO WESLEYAN also sent athletes to the Ashland Alumni meet on Sunday. The Yeomen were led by Alex Guo (Tokyo, Japan/American School) who was second in the long jump (21’06.00”), while the Yeowomen were paced by sophomore Sophia Brancazio (Chapel Hill, NC/East) who finished second in the 200-meter dash (25.98) and sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.35). OWU senior Sharif Kronemer (Silver Springs, MD/Springbrook) posted the Bishops’ top finish at Ashland with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run, while sophomore Cara DeAngelis (Norton, OH/Ellet) won the 1,500-meter run (4:42.74) to lead the OWU women.
DEPAUW and WABASH rounded out NCAC track & field squads in competition last weekend at the Bellarmine Invitational in Kentucky. The Little Giants were again led by senior Kevin McCarthy (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) who won the 5,000-meter run (14:53.45) with the fastest time posted by a Little Giant student-athlete this season. The DePauw women were led by senior Sam Wong (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young) who finished third in the triple jump (34’07.00”) and eighth in the long jump (16’08.50”), while the men saw its top finish come from freshman Jim Easterhouse (Evergreen, IL/Mt. Carmel) with a 10th-place showing in the 800-meter run (1:57.35).
