NCAC Weekly Release (10-9-12) - Men's Soccer
DePauw snapped Ohio Wesleyan’s conference record 42-game unbeaten streak in NCAC play that dated back to October 2007 with its 3-2 win over the Bishops on Saturday. During that streak, the Bishops posted a record of 40-0-2 against conference competition. This week features a full slate of conference contests, including five games on Wednesday and five games on Saturday.
ALLEGHENY remained unbeaten in conference play with a 4-1 win over Wabash Saturday at Frank B. Fuhrer Field. Senior midfielder Conor Azevedo (Cranberry, PA/Seneca Valley) found the back of the net twice for Allegheny as senior forward David DelGreco (Pittsburgh, PA/Seton-La Salle) improved his point-scoring streak to six games, assisting on senior forward Chris Brennan’s 25-foot blast that put the Gators up 3-0. Allegheny hosts Wooster on Tuesday before traveling to Kenyon on Saturday.
DENISON scored a season-high five goals to earn its first NCAC victory of the season on Saturday against Wooster. Mark Waterman (Prospect, KY/duPont Manuel) led DU with one goal and two assists against the Fighting Scots.
DEPAUW knocked off their second ranked opponent of the season last week, downing 13th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan, 3-2. The last two defeats against conference opponents by the Battling Bishops, the defending national champions, have come at the expense of the Tigers who defeated Ohio Wesleyan in last years’ conference tournament en route to an NCAA Championship berth.
HIRAM remained unbeaten in 2012 after a non-conference victory against Case and a tough 3-1 result versus NCAC foe Wittenberg. Senior midfielder Ryan Greenhill (Solon, OH/Solon) led the way for Hiram posting a goal and two assists on the week.
KENYON played just one game this week and chalked up a 1-0 win at Oberlin.
OBERLIN dropped its first conference game of the season, falling to Kenyon College, 1-0, on Saturday night.
Freshman midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) and junior midfielder Jacob Eganhouse (Westerville, OH/St. Francis DeSales) scored second-half goals to give 13th-ranked OHIO WESLEYAN an NCAC victory over Wooster. Senior Paul Hendricks (Columbus, OH/Worthington Kilbourne) had two saves in posting the shutout in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Senior back Kit North (Powell, OH/Bishop Watterson) converted a penalty kick to wipe out a 2-1 deficit, but DePauw scored late in the second overtime period to escape with a win. The loss was Ohio Wesleyan’s first in NCAC play since October 6, 2007, snapping the Bishops’ conference-record 42-game unbeaten streak in NCAC games. Ohio Wesleyan had compiled a 40-0-2 conference record during that run.
WABASH traveled to Allegheny Saturday, a match that included a homecoming for Little Giant first-year head coach Chris Keller. The return to Meadville was bitter-sweet for the former Allegheny assistant coach as the Gators scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half on the way to a 4-1 victory. Steve Magura (Valparaiso, IN/Andrean) scored his third goal of the season by tallying the only goal of the contest for Wabash. George Vinihakis (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) picked up his team-leading fourth assist.
WITTENBERG dropped a pair of home games this week, first to Point Park, 4-2, and then to No. 21 Hiram, 3-1, on Homecoming. Senior Alejandro Garcia (Toledo, OH/St. Francis) picked up his second goal of the season in getting the Tigers a 1-0 halftime lead, but Hiram responded with three second-half scores to take the match.
WOOSTER lost a pair of NCAC contests last week to fall to 0-3 in conference play. The Scots dropped decisions against Ohio Wesleyan, 2-0, and Denison, 5-3.
