NCAC Weekly Release (4-16-12) - Men's Lacrosse
Denison (4-0, 10-1) maintained its hold on the top spot in the North Coast men’s lacrosse standings after knocking off Wittenberg (1-2, 7-4) on Saturday. The Big Red has the opportunity to clinch the 2012 NCAC title this Saturday as they host second-place Kenyon (2-0, 8-3) at 1:00 p.m. in Granville. Also on Saturday’s schedule is a 5:00 p.m. matchup featuring Wooster (1-2, 6-6) and Wittenberg in Springfield.
DENISON, ranked eighth in the nation, remained undefeated in league play following a 16-5 road victory over Wittenberg. Senior attack Alex Hardt (Dallas, TX/Episcopol) dished out a career-high five assists, while three other DU players posted hat tricks in the victory. The Big Red can clinch the 2012 NCAC title this Saturday as they host second-place Kenyon in the first-ever Thomsen-Heiser Trophy game, which is named in honor of legendary head coaches Tommy Thomsen Jr. (DEN) and Bill Heiser (KEN).
KENYON posted an 11-9 win over Ohio Wesleyan to remain undefeated in league play and set up a marquee matchup against Denison in the first-ever Thomsen-Heiser Trophy game to be played this Saturday in Granville. In the victory over OWU, sophomore midfielder Caleb Florence (Decatur, GA/Loomis Chaffee) netted four goals, while junior Will Lowe (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) dished out four assists and tallied one goal.
OBERLIN opened the week with a narrow 7-5 defeat at the hands of Wooster, but rebounded on Saturday with a 14-0 triumph over Alma. In the victory over Alma, seven different Yeomen scored at least one goal, led by freshmen Eli Fisher (West Hartford, CT/Hall) and Sean Seaman (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/North) who each scored three times.
OHIO WESLEYAN posted a 12-6 triumph over Otterbein in non-conference action on Tuesday, but was upended by Kenyon, 11-9, in league play on Saturday. Junior attack Colin Short (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) finished the week with seven total points (4g, 3a) and a perfect shooting percentage after finding the net on all four of his shot attempts.
WITTENBERG dropped its second league game of the season with a 16-5 loss against Denison on Saturday. Senior Spencer Baker (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) made 11 saves in the pipes for the Tigers, while freshman Andrew Morrison (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) and junior Tyler Hall (Evanston, IL/Evanston Twp.) scored two goals apiece.
WOOSTER defeated NCAC foe Oberlin, 7-5, in its only action last week. Junior Matt Ranck (West Bloomfield, MI/Walled Lake) recorded his eighth hat trick of the season in the victory, scoring twice in the first quarter and once in the second to help the Fighting Scots build a 6-1 halftime lead.
