Allegheny College

The first to be founded -- in 1815 -- of the venerable North Coast Athletic Conference institutions, Allegheny today remains at the fore among the nation's colleges of arts and sciences.  Keeping standards high and avoiding gimmicks or fads, Allegheny believes that its graduates' success is rooted in rigorous liberal arts preparation:  experience in multiple disciplines; important historical perspective; and exceptional ability to think critically and to use the English language forcefully and correctly, in writing as well as speech.

The more than 2,100 students come from 37 states and 32 countries.  The student-faculty ratio is 14/1; the average class size 22. Allegheny is a high-contact teaching institution, but faculty are also prominent practitioners of the disciplines they teach.  When students discover that their chemistry professor is also a leading chemist, for example, they learn the difference between studying a subject and being part of the discipline itself.  This explains, in part, the leadership positions to which Alleghenians regularly rise -- in business, government, social service, the professions, and more.  Another reason is the Senior Project, a substantial piece of original research done by each student in his or her major field, which not only develops unusual self-confidence, but demands integration of the knowledge and skills developed over four years.

Allegheny is especially well-known for pre-professional education; acceptance rates to law and medical schools roughly double the national average.  There is strength throughout all 30 majors, however.  Further encouraged are double majors and student-designed majors, which are tailored by the student and advisor to the student's personal goals.

NCAC Weekly Release (4-1-13) - Softball

North Coast softball squads opened up the conference portion of the schedule last week as Kenyon (2-0, 14-5) and Ohio Wesleyan (2-0, 9-5) earned sweeps over Oberlin (0-2, 2-10) and Wittenberg (0-2, 9-4) respectively. Conference play continues this week as Wooster (0-0, 9-7) and Hiram (0-0, 4-12) are scheduled to square off Saturday marking the first NCAC action for each squad.

NCAC Weekly Release (4-1-13) - Baseball

Divisional play got underway in the North Coast last weekend with Oberlin (2-0, 8-8) and Wittenberg (3-1, 11-2) jumping out to early leads in the East and West, respectively. Non-conference mid-week games will continue in the week ahead, while divisional play will return to the schedule over the weekend with four divisional series on the slate.

NCAC Weekly Release (4-1-13) - Men's Tennis

There was minimal North Coast men’s tennis action last week; however, Ohio Wesleyan (1-1, 5-9) did capture a pair of victories, including a 5-4 triumph over NCAC East Division foe Wooster (0-1, 5-8) on Wednesday. NCAC Divisional matches will pick back up this week with Oberlin (1-0, 7-4) hosting Wooster on Tuesday, Wittenberg  (0-0, 9-2) traveling to Wabash (0-0, 11-6) on Saturday and Allegheny (0-0, 8-0) entertaining Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.

NCAC Weekly Release (4-1-13) - Golf

Only three North Coast golf teams were in action last week as the Allegheny and Wittenberg men competed at The West Cup in Jurupa Valley, California, while the DePauw women’s squad wrapped up competition at the Low Country Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

NCAC Weekly Release (4-1-13) - Track & Field

Nearly every North Coast track & field squad was in action last week, highlighted by Wabash earning the team title at the Hanover Invitational. NCAC track & field continues in the week ahead, led by Denison, Kenyon, Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg all competing at the annual Marve Frye Invitational, held OWU’s George Gauthier Track.

Allegheny's Steven Ramsdell Collects NCBWA Pitcher Of The Week Honor

Allegheny sophomore pitcher Steven Ramsdell capped his week of regional and conference accolades with the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Pitcher of the Week honor, announced Thursday.

Allegheny's Steven Ramsdell Named To D3baseball.com Team Of The Week

Allegheny sophomore pitcher Steven Ramsdell has been named to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week, announced Tuesday. Ramsdell recorded a 0.00 ERA over two games, pitching 13.0 innings of shutout work while striking out eight.  Ramsdell recorded a six-inning no-hitter in an 11-0 win over Hamilton on Mar. 22 after shutting out Plattsburgh State, 1-0, on Mar. 18.

NCAC Weekly Release (3-25-13) - Softball

North Coast softball squads wrapped up spring break trips last week, as eight teams open up the conference portion of their schedules this Saturday. Highlights include, Ohio Wesleyan (7-3) traveling to Wittenberg (9-2) and Denison (7-3) hosting Allegheny (7-11). Additionally, DePauw (4-6) and Kenyon (12-5) will hit the road to square off against Hiram (5-9) and Oberlin (1-5), respectively.

NCAC Weekly Release (3-25-13) - Women's Tennis

Denison (1-0, 9-2) knocked off Ohio Wesleyan (0-1, 2-8), 9-0, to open up conference play this past week. The Big Red is currently riding a nine match with streak after picking up a second victory last week against Walsh. Non-conference action continues this week, highlighted by DePauw (6-4) and Oberlin (7-4) both wrapping up spring break trips.
