No. 3 Gettysburg entered the NCAA second round match-up with Denison armed with the nation's sixth-ranked defense and the 12th ranked offense in Division III. DU countered with an offense that averaged nearly 15 goals per game and held opponents to under eight. Despite a spirited effort, Denison fell to the defending national champion, Bullets, 17-7, but gained significant experience while playing deeper into the NCAA Tournament than ever before.
The Denison softball team closed out its magical 2012 season on Saturday morning in Alma, MI. In the third elimination game of the NCAA Alma Regional, DU suffered a 1-0 setback to Chicago and ends its season with a 28-19 record.
The DePauw women were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament after dropping a 5-0 decision against Carnegie Mellon on Saturday morning, while the Kenyon men advanced to the third round with a 5-0 triumph over Baldwin-Wallace. The Lords will take on either Kalamazoo or Mary Washington tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 PM with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line.
DePauw shot a final round 314, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with Methodist as the Monarchs shot a 310 and finished six strokes ahead of the Tigers for their 13th straight Division III title. Junior Liz Blyth birdied the final hole on Friday to lift Allegheny into a tie for ninth place at the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships. The Gators, who are the first team across all NCAA divisions to qualify for the national championships their first seven years as a varsity program, extended their streak of top-10 finishes after capping a strong national tournament with another excellent round.
Freshman Julie Rooney (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) hit a walk-off single to keep Denison's NCAA Tournament run alive on Friday afternoon in Alma, Mich. The Big Red eliminated Penn State-Behrend following a 5-4 come-from-behind victory. The Big Red improves to 28-18, while Penn State-Behrend ends its season with a 26-15 record. Denison returns to action on Saturday at 10 a.m. DU will take on the loser of the game between top-seeded Trine and No. 4 seed Chicago.
Sandra Sanford has announced her resignation as the head coach of Allegheny softball after maintaining the prominence of the Gators' historically successful program for the last nine years. Sanford has enjoyed an outstanding coaching career that has included three regular-season NCAC titles. She led the Gators to the NCAA tournament on three occasions, and totaled five seasons with at least 20 wins. In 2012, the Gators finished with a 27-11-1 overall record as Sanford was named NCAC Coach of the Year for the second time.
The DePauw women's golf team remains in second-place with 934 total strokes (314-307-313), while Allegheny also held steady in the team standings in eighth-place with 958 strokes (320-320-318) through three days of competition at the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships. 12-time defending national champion, Methodist, sits atop the team leaderboard with a 54-hole score of 932.
The NCAA Division III tennis committees have selected individuals who will compete in the singles and doubles competition of the 2012 NCAA Div. III Tennis Championships which will be held at the Carry Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina, May 21-26.
Third-seeded Alma College rallied for four runs in the seventh inning en route to a 6-5 victory over the No. 6 seed Denison Big Red on Thursday afternoon in Alma, MI. With the loss, DU drops into the loser's bracket and will play on Friday at 12 PM.
