2012 NCAC Lacrosse Players of the Week

April 30th

Fletcher Franklin, Kenyon

Kenyon sophomore goalie Fletcher Franklin helped launch the Lords to their first 10-win season since 2008 and their best NCAC record since 2000 after backstopping a pair of league victories against Oberlin, 13-3, and Wooster, 11-5. Franklin totaled nine saves in 105 minutes of action over the two games combined for a goals against average of 3.43 on the week.

Madison Carey, Wooster

Wooster senior Madison Carey set the program’s single season scoring record after totaling 13 points (6g, 7a) in two games last week. She scored five goals and added two assists during a 19-12 win over Ohio Wesleyan, and then produced one goal and five helpers in a 15-4 triumph over St. Vincent on Saturday. She currently sits at 91 points on the season, passing former Fighting Scot great and current Wittenberg head coach Beth Hemminger’s mark of 85 points set in the 2003 season.

April 23rd

Zach Walsh, Denison

Denison senior Zach Walsh scored three goals and added one assist in the Big Red’s 11-6 victory over Kenyon on Saturday that clinched the 2012 NCAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship for DU. Trailing 6-5 in the third quarter, Walsh tied the game with an extra-man goal and followed with the eventual game-winner just four minutes later.

Kenyon junior attack Leah Sack helped the Ladies secure their first NCAC win of the season over Ohio Wesleyan, 10-6, by scoring two goals and dishing out three assists. She also served up six assists and netted two goals in an 18-10 win over Thiel. Sack currently holds the KC career-record for assists with 98 and is leading the NCAC this season with 28 helpers. In addition, Sack won five draw controls and scooped up two ground balls in the two games combined.

April 16th

Will Lowe, Kenyon
(Charlotte, NC/Myers Park)

Kenyon junior Will Lowe ignited the Lords’ key 11-9 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday after dishing out four assists and scoring one goal. Lowe, who also tallied two groundballs in the victory, now leads Kenyon on the season in both assists (23) and points (34).

Bronwen Schumacher, Oberlin

Oberlin freshman Brownwen Schumacher helped the Yeowomen earn their first league win since 2007, a 10-8 triumph over Allegheny on Saturday. Schumacher scored two goals in the victory, including the game-winner with just 24 seconds remaining in the contest. As important as the game-winning goal, Schumacher then won the ensuing draw control that allowed Oberlin to run down the clock and secure the monumental win. On the week, Schumacher totaled six points (5g, 1a), eight draw controls and six groundballs.

April 9th

Brandon Keiser, Wittenberg
(Reistertown, MD/Park School)

Wittenberg freshman Brandon Keiser led the Tigers to two wins last week with a team-best five goals and one assist, including two goals in a 13-2 league victory over Oberlin on Saturday.

Alex Thurner, Denison

Denison senior Alex Thurner scored nine goals and dished out two assists to help the Big Red open the NCAC schedule with a pair of wins over Oberlin and Allegheny last week. In DU’s 17-10 win over Allegheny on Senior Day, Thurner erupted for a career-high seven goals to go along with two assists for nine total points, which was one shy of her career record. Thurner is currently tied for the team lead with 27 goals and ranks second in both assists (16) and points (43).

April 2nd

Eddie Vita, Denison
(Coronado, CA/Coronado)

Denison sophomore Eddie Vita led the Big Red to a 12-5 victory over NCAC-rival Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday by netting four goals and dishing out one assist for five total points. On the season, Vita currently leads DU with 22 goals and ranks second on the squad in both points (30) and shots (46).

Francine Murzynski, Wittenberg
(Mentor, OH/Lake Catholic)

Wittenberg sophomore Francine Murzynski led the Tigers to their first win over league-rival Wooster, 10-8, since 2003 and only their second since 1992 with two goals and one assist. She also racked up nine draw controls, four ground balls and one caused turnover in the victory.

March 26th

Colin Short, Ohio Wesleyan

Ohio Wesleyan junior attack Colin Short ignited the Battling Bishops’ attack in victories over Oberlin, 12-3, and Mt. St. Joseph, 18-5, with 15 total points (2g, 13a), including an eight assist performance against MSJ, which is tied for the fourth highest single-game assist output in school history.

Kate Hanick, Oberlin
(Kennett Square, PA/Kennett)

Oberlin freshman Kate Hanick scored seven goals in victories over Waynesburg, 13-3, and St. Vincent, 12-8, to lead the Yeowomen to their best start in school history at 6-0. In addition, Hanick totaled seven ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers in the two victories combined.

March 19th

Geoff Akie, Kenyon

Kenyon senior Geoff Akie sparked the Lords’ 20-7 victory over Hendrix on Saturday. Akie scored a game-high five goals and dished out three assists to total eight points on the afternoon.

Annie Swanson, Ohio Wesleyan
(McLean, VA/Langley)

Ohio Wesleyan junior Annie Swanson bolstered the Battling Bishops’ offensive unit that scored 51 goals in three games last week. Swanson opened the week with two goals against RPI, scored three goals and dished out two assists against New England and led OWU with six goals and two assists on Sunday against Albion.

March 12th

Alex Hardt, Denison

Ground Balls:

Denison senior Alex Hardt (Dallas, TX/Episcopal) scored four goals and added one assist in the Big Red’s 11-7 victory against Haverford. The Big Red are 4-0 and ranked 12th in the most recent USILA Coaches Poll. Hardt leads Denison in scoring with 14 goals and two assists through four games this season.

 

Kiah Voyer-Colbath, Allegheny

Allegheny senior Kiah Voyer-Colbath (York, ME/York) had an outstanding week, including a three goal performance against Lycoming and her second five-goal game of the season against Adrian. Kiah also dominated the Bulldogs on draw controls, scooping up a season high 12.
