Wittenberg Men; DePauw Women Lead After First Event Of 2012 NCAC Golf Championship Series
The first event of the 2012 NCAC Golf Championship Series was contested over the weekend (Apr. 21-22) at The Country Club of Meadville in Pennsylvania. Defending NCAC men’s champion Wittenberg leads after the first event with a 36-hole total of 601 (304-297), while DePauw sits atop the women’s standings after posting a two-day team total of 644 (326-318).
In the men’s standings, DePauw and Ohio Wesleyan are tied for second with 614 strokes, followed by Denison (620), Allegheny (624), Wooster (628), Wabash (648), Hiram (663), Kenyon (665) and Oberlin (805). Defending NCAC champion Allegheny is second in the women’s standings with 656 strokes, followed by Wittenberg (688), Denison (727), Ohio Wesleyan (743), Wooster (762) and Hiram (No team points).
The second and final event of the championship series will be held at Oberlin Golf Club in Oberlin, Ohio, this weekend (April 28-29), with Oberlin serving as the host institution. The men’s event will consist of 54-holes, with 36 being played on Saturday and 18 on Sunday, while the women will play 36-holes, with 18 being played on both days.
NCAC Men’s & Women’s Champions will be determined by the combined results of both events, while the men’s champion also earns the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament. In addition, both genders recognize the individual medalist from the combined events as well as the season MVP which is voted on by the league coaches. The men’s individual championship medalist is presented the Bob Nye Award and the conference MVP earns the Dick Gordin Award.
Wittenberg junior Craig Osterbrock (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington), who won the 2011 Bob Nye Championship Medalist Award, leads the individual standings after event one with a two-day total of 144 (73-71). DePauw sophomore Graham Singer (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) and Ohio Wesleyan senior Caleb Chiero (Westerville, OH/Central) are tied for second with 36-hole scores of 147, while Denison sophomore Dylan Lee (Hinsdale, IL/Central) and Ohio Wesleyan junior Jerry Moore (Mogadore, OH/Mogadore) are tied for fourth with identical two-day totals of 148.
In the women’s individual standings, DePauw senior Kelly Gaughan (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) stands alone in the top position after carding a two-day total of 157 (81-76), while DPU sophomore Kelsey Smith (Indianapolis, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) is second in the individual standings with a 159 (80-79). Hiram senior Kritsinee Khowcharoen (Muang, Phitsanulok, Thailand/Freyburg Academy, ME) sits in third after carding a 161 (81-80) and Ohio Wesleyan freshman Courtney Tincher (Zanesville, OH/West Muskingum) is fourth with a two-day total of 162 (80-82), while Allegheny senior Lauren Hammell (McMurray, PA/Peters Twp.) and Wittenberg freshman Rachel Steiner (Hamilton, OH/Lakota West) are tied for fifth with identical two-day totals of 164.
