NCAC Weekly Release (9-4-12) - Field Hockey

Every North Coast field hockey squad but Ohio Wesleyan will see conference action in the coming week. Wednesday, Wooster (0-0, 0-2) hosts Denison (0-0, 1-0) and DePauw (0-0, 1-1) entertains Wittenberg (0-0, 0-2). On Saturday, Oberlin (0-0, 1-0) heads to Denison, while Kenyon (0-0, 0-2) travels to Earlham (0-0, 0-2).

DENISON opened the 2012 season with a 2-0 victory over Hendrix on Friday in Granville.  Junior Taylor Bacon (Mission Hills, KS/Pembroke Hill School) and sophomore Molly Chapman (Greenwich, CT/Millbrook School) each logged unassisted tallies to secure the win.  Senior goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) made three saves in the shutout effort.

DEPAUW split a pair of games over the weekend knocking off Bridgewater 5-3 and narrowly falling to seventh ranked Lynchburg 3-2. The Tigers registered 42 total team shots (28 SOG) in the weekend pair, besting their opponents by 20 shots.

EARLHAM dropped its first match of the 2012 season 3-0 to visiting Hendrix College. The contest marked the first one at Darrell Beane Stadium on Field Turf.

A young KENYON team hit the road for a couple of tough season-opening games. The Ladies wound up dropping a 5-0 contest against Rochester and then fell 4-3 in overtime at Nazareth.

First-year Head Coach Anna Baeth won her debut as OBERLIN scored four second-half goals to down Bethany, 7-2. Six different players scored in the game, with junior Karin Yoshida (Himeji, Japan/ Westminster School) leading the way with two. Sophomore Rachel Zuckerman (Timonium, MD / Dulaney) added three assists in the win.

Senior midfielder Lauren Bailey (Toledo, OH/Ottawa Hills) contributed two goals and an assist to lead the OHIO WESLEYAN offense as the Bishops defeated Bethany in their season opener on Sunday at Selby Stadium. Junior attacker Sadie Slager (Hudson) and sophomore attacker Allison Smith added a goal and an assist apiece.

WITTENBERG run into a pair of tough opponents to start the 2012 season at the Wilkes Colonel Classic, including fourth-ranked Salisbury and host Wilkes. The Tigers lost 6-0 to Salisbury and dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker in overtime to Wilkes. Sophomore Audrey Phibbs (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) scored a goal and assisted on another, while freshman Karen Blacklock (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) scored her first collegiate goal in the loss to Wilkes.

WOOSTER dropped two tough one goal contests over the weekend, losing to Utica 3-2 and Oneonta State 4-3 in OT. Senior forward Clare Nelson-Johnson (Wilmette, IL/Loyola Academy) led the Scots scoring three goals in the two games.
