NCAC Weekly Release (11-13-11) -- NCAA Cross Country Meets

The NCAA Division III Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championships, hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh, will be contested at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wisconsin on Saturday. Two teams from each regional automatically qualified for the national meet. At-large berths were also awarded to 16 other teams, selected by the national committee. Aside from runners who are part of qualifying teams, eight individuals from each gender also qualified automatically from each region.

WABASH claimed second place at the Great Lakes Regional, hosted by Oberlin, to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship field, while the ALLEGHENY men, third at the Mid-East Regional, and the OBERLIN women, fourth at the Great Lakes Regional, each earned one of the at-large bids into their genders championship field.

Wabash makes its second consecutive appearance in the national meet as senior Kevin McCarthy (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) won the race with his season-best time (24:31.01). Allegheny junior Bobby Over (Wadsworth, OH/Wadsworth) ran the race of his life to win the Mid-East Regional title in 25:25 at DeSales University in Pennsylvania.

Individuals who automatically qualified for the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships are Allegheny sophomore Kristina Martin (Holley, NY/Holley), Kenyon sophomore Jenna Willett (Kensngton, MD/Walter Johnson), Wittenberg senior Mary Pfeifer (Dublin, OH/Coffman) and Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Cara DeAngelis (Norton, OH/Ellet) on the women’s side. Pfeifer participates in the national championship for the third time in her career. Willett set a Kenyon school record with her time of 21:50.41 for six kilometers.

For the men, Denison senior Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, OH/Lakewood) was second at the Great Lakes Regional for the second straight year and earns his third consecutive bid to the national meet. DePauw junior Noah Droddy (Indianapolis, IN/International) also earned a berth.
